Introduction to Gadolinium Gallium Garnet

Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) is a synthetic crystalline material with the chemical formula Gd3Ga5O unit cell contains 24 ions, with eight Gd3+ ions at the corners, six Ga3+ ions at the octahedral sites, and 12 oxygen ions at the tetrahedral sites. It is a highly transparent material with excellent thermal and optical properties, which makes it a popular choice for use in various applications such as magneto-optical devices, laser technology, and laser host material.

Properties of Gadolinium Gallium Garnet

Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) exhibits a number of important thermal and optical properties:

  • High melting point (1725°C)
  • Good thermal conductivity (7.5 W/mK)
  • Low thermal expansion coefficient (5.6x10-6/K)
  • Excellent optical transparency in the visible and infrared regions
  • Large Verdet constant (the extent to which a material rotates the plane of polarization of light passing through it in a magnetic field)
  • Refractive index (1.96 at 633 nm)
  • High damage threshold for laser radiation

Comparison with Similar Materials

Compared to other similar materials such as Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) and Terbium Gallium Garnet (TGG), Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) has a higher thermal conductivity, which makes it better suited for high-power laser applications. It also has a larger Verdet constant than YIG and TGG, which makes it a better choice for magneto-optical applications. Additionally, GGG has a high damage threshold for laser radiation, which makes it more durable and long-lasting than some other materials.

Typical Substrates for Epitaxial Growth

GGG has a lattice constant of 12.383 Å, which makes it compatible with various substrates such as gadolinium gallium oxide (Gd3Ga5O12), magnesium oxide (MgO), and yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). These substrates provide a good lattice match for epitaxial growth of GGG thin films.
