Introduction to Strontium Stannate

Strontium stannate is a Ruddleson Popper perovskite material with the chemical formula Sr3Sn2O7. It has gained significant attention in the field of materials science and engineering due to its unique properties and potential applications in electronic devices. Sr3Sn2O7 along with several other Ruddleson-Popper Perovskite exhibit hybrid improper ferroelectricity (HIF) which is a way to realize multiferroic effect avoiding the incompatibility of electronic configuration in so called proper ferroelectrics. Hybrid improper ferroelectricity is defined as the ferroelectricity caused by the coupling of two non-polar octahedral rotation modes of different symmetry

Structural and Chemical Properties of Strontium Stannate

Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) perovskite oxides have the formula (A'O) (ABO3)2, where A, A’ and B are cations, and the ‘2’ represents the number of oxygen octahedral layers connected along the c axis. The B ion is in the center of the oxygen octahedron, the A and A’ ion are in the interspace of the octahedron with coordination numbers of 12 and 9, respectively.

Comparison with Similar Materials

Other Ruddleson-Popper Perovskites include Sr3Ru2O7, Sr2TiO4, Ca2MnO4 and SrLaAlO4.

Crystal Structure of Strontium Stannate

As mentioned earlier, Strontium stannate has a cubic crystal structure that belongs to the perovskite family. The material has a lattice parameter of 4.16 Å, which makes it a suitable candidate for epitaxial growth on various substrates. The crystal structure of Strontium stannate is essential for its electronic and optical properties, making it a promising material for various thin film applications.

Typical Substrates for Epitaxial Growth of Strontium Stannate

Strontium stannate can be grown epitaxially on various substrates with a good lattice match. Some of the typical substrates used for epitaxial growth of Strontium stannate include Strontium titanate, Magnesium oxide, and Gadolinium gallium garnet. The choice of substrate depends on the specific application and desired properties of the thin film.
